Yankees Offense

Posted on: July 16, 2008 12:32 pm

Now that the first half of the season is over, it's time to reflect on some of the issues still plaguing the Yankees. When the Rays went into the seven game losing streak, the Yankees had a great chance to make up a lot of ground but they failed miserably because the offense decided to break for the All-Star Game early. If there was ever an opportunity, that was probably it.

I am surprised that hitting coach Kevin Long hasn't taken more heat over the team's inability to hit consistently. The Yankees batting rank is okay and the stats look respectable but the team just doesn't deliver consistently. Now the Yankees want to consider bringing in Sexson or even Bonds at this point in the season? There is a reason why Bonds wasn't signed earlier and it should be the same reason they shouldn't sign him now. As for Sexson, what exactly is he going to bring other than a huge strikeout total and low OBP? I agree the Yankees could use a bat what good can come from bringing these guys in when your current players aren't delivering.

Whether Kevin Long survives the season or they bring in someone else to help him out, the Yankees need to get Cano, Melky and some others into a groove. It doesn't look good for Matsui and Damon lately so these other "all-stars" in the lineup need to step it up. The pitching has held up relatively well since Wang went down and the Yankees have found another useful arm in Robertson. With Bruney back on the mound in the minors, he might be back by early August. Joba, Mussina and Pettitte have done well enough but they need the hitting to help them out.

Yankees Offense

First off, the new pic is even better than the last one.  Don't remember may RU girls looking like that when I went there.  Then again, not much looks good when a 5 win football season makes your coach BE coach of the year.

I hadn't considered Long being in trouble, but that is an interesting point.  Bonds' agent has said no team has contacted him so that is just rumor.  Sexon would come so cheap it may be worth a flier.  Cano is a second half hitter so expect him to come on and Melky's only a .280 guy anyway so don't go too crazy over a bad year for him.

The big thing to me with the lineup that is true this year as it has been the last few is they can kill bad pitching and pile on in blowouts.  The situational hitting just isn't there.  Now certainly losing Matsui and Damon (and Posada) for large parts of the year hurts, but the fact that they went 4 or 5 games scoring 2 runs or less then put up 18 gave them respectable numbers for the week when in fact they were atrotious.

The need to make real changes to that lineup.  Maybe put Jeter first.  He is heating up and always a second half player.  Abreau second, a-rod third and Giambi fourth.  Maybe put giambi third and abreu 5th.  But something.  They've almost tied the number of times last year they scored 2 or fewer.  Girardi came in on a montra of being proactive... now's the time.
